UNIJOS MANAGEMENT VISIT SECURITY CHIEFS IN PLATEAU STATE
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako has led Principal Officers of the University on courtesy visits to Security Chiefs in Plateau State.
While at the Headquarters of Operation Safe Haven in Jos, Professor Maimako said they were at the Command to appreciate the Commander, Major General Augustine Agundu and his team for the role they played in ensuring the safety of Staff and Students of University during the last crisis that affected Jos metropolis.
Professor Maimako seized the opportunity to appeal to the Commander to provide permanent military presence around the University and on routes leading to the University to safeguard the lives of both Staff and Students of the University.
He also wants the Command to assist the University in tackling the menace of Open Grazing on its Campus by Herdsmen which according to him has defied all attempts at dialogue between the University authorities and the Herdsmen.
Responding, the Commander, Operation Safe Haven, Major General Augustine Agundu said he was pleased to receive the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor. According to Major General Agundu he had planned to pay a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor and the University Community before the unfortunate crisis that occurred. General Agundu said the solution to the incessant crises on the Plateau cannot be found in books or in Government White Papers but with individual citizens and Community leaders who must be sincere about addressing the issue.
The Commander assured the Vice-Chancellor that his request would not only be looked into but concrete action would be taken by the Command to ensure the safety of lives of both Staff and Students of the University.
Also visited was the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Agbonlahor at the State Police Command Headquarters. Mr. Agbonlahor assured the Vice-Chancellor of the Command’s readiness to assist the University in providing the needed security for the safety of both Staff and Students.
The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the Commissioner of Police for his show of concern and assurances given for improved security cover to the University. Mr. Agbonlahor later presented a Plaque to the Vice-Chancellor in appreciation for the visit.
Similarly, the security challenges being experienced by the University Community have been presented to the Director, Department of State Services and other top Management Staff of the Plateau State Command who also promised to strengthen measures towards ensuring the safety of lives and property of Staff and Students of the University.
