UNIVERSITY OF JOS ORGANISES MOLECULAR BIOLOGY TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP
The University of Jos has initiated a process towards equipping researchers with basic techniques in Molecular Biology.
The process began with a week-long training on theme “The Meeting point of skills and Research opportunities in Molecular Biology” which was organized by the University’s Department of Microbiology in collaboration with the African Centre of Excellence in Phytomedicine Research and Development (ACEPRD).
Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako described contributions of the Department of Microbiology as impactful and advised that equipment donated for the Workshop should be utilized maximally.
Speaking through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Teresa Nmadu, Maimako expressed hope that the collaboration will contribte towards sustaining the vision of the institution.
Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Jos, Professor Georgina Mwansat said the Faculty is determined to equip researchers with requisite knowledge to compete favorably with their counterparts around the world.
Head, Department of Microbiology, Dr. John Egbere said Molecular Biology is the best method by which Microbiology can be studied holistically hence the need for Government and relevant agencies to invest in the discipline for greater interaction with the global Scientific community.
Keynote Speaker at the Workshop and Director, Human Virology, Nigeria, Professor Alash’le Abimiku, represented by Sophia Osawe of the Plateau State Human Virology Research Centre described the training as necessary to make the participants conversant with the paradigm shift in modern research methods.
Some of the participants said the training will help bridge the gap between theory and practice and will avail them the opportunity of acquiring more knowledge on the contemporary advancements in molecular biology techniques.
At the end of the Five-Day Workshop, participants would learn more about good laboratory practices, basic principles of Molecular Biology techniques, research projects design in Molecular Biology, basic bioinformatics, use of Micropettes, DNA and plasmid isolation, electrophoresis among others.
