UNIJOS TO BENEFIT FROM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RELEASE OF TAKE-OFF GRANT
The University of Jos may benefit from the release Take-off Grant recently directed by the Federal House of Representatives to the Federal Government.
This came light when the House unanimously adopted a motion moved at Plenary on Tuesday 29th September, 2020 titled “Non-Release of Take-off Grants to Federal Universities across the Country”. In the motion moved by Mr. Unyime Idem representing Ukanafun/Oruk Federal Constituency of Akwa-Ibom State, he noted that there were some Federal Universities in Nigeria including UniJos that are yet to receive Take-off Grants decades after their establishment and commencement of academic activities.
He described Take-off Grants as seed Funds provided by the Federal Government to assist newly established Universities commence academic activities, embark on training, pay salaries of pioneer workers, provide the requisite technology, books and other crucial materials needed to run the Universities.
According to Mr. Idem, Unijos among other Federal Universities such as University of Uyo, is yet to received its Take-off Grant decades after being established and this has hampered the growth and development of the University. Mr. Idem noted that the unfortunate development has given the House concern, as according to him, this has hampered the rapid provision of the required infrastructure at the various campuses of the affected Universities, overstretching the existing facilities due to lack of Lecture Halls and other infrastructure in the institutions.
