UNIJOS STAFF NAMED AS SOLE AFRICAN IN 12 MEMBER INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH COMMITTEE
A Senior Lecturer in the College of Health Sciences, University of Jos, Dr. Daniel Kokong has emerged the only African named on the 12-member Research and Scholarship Standing Committee at the International College of Surgeons, the highest Medical ruling body of Surgeons in the world.
The Medical Researcher who hails from Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State was appointed into the global Committee to serve for two years (2019-2020) based on his track record and outstanding performance in Medical Research and professional practice.
In an exclusive interview with the University’s Information and Publications Division, Dr. Kokong attributed his achievement to hard work and perseverance stressing that University of Jos has served as his driving force where he has received mentorship and therefore must be projected to rest of the world.
The Medical Researcher said his emergence will create an opportunity for him to market Unijos, Plateau State, Nigeria and Africa to the rest of the world.Decrying the poor funding of the Education and Healthcare delivery systems in most African Countries, Kokong promised to make a special case for the University of Jos, Nigeria and Africa as a whole while serving as an ambassador of Nigeria and Africa at the College.
Speaking on his area of concern in the Health care delivery system, the Medical Practitioner said he has a lot of interest in Cancer as it has caused great affliction to the human race, noting that the causes of cancer must be unraveled which will enable him work towards the establishment of cancer centers, early detection, treatments and funding of research work in Africa.
Dr. Kokong also encouraged Medical personnel to always make saving life the first priority by building their intellectual capacity towards helping humanity while other benefits of life will come to them eventually.Dr. Daniel Kokong who is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck (ENT-HD) Surgeon, is also a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and had in 2018 undertaken a research work alongside five other Distinguished Professors of the College of Health Sciences, University of Jos and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) on weight estimation which he believed contributed to his emergence as member of the Standing Committee of International Surgeons.
The Research Team derived a formula for weight estimation in Adults from their height with the report published by the International Journal of Emergency Medicine and was regarded as first of its kind in World Medical Literature ensuring it was nominated for the 18thAnnual Wiley Price in Biomedical Sciences in 2019.
