Press Release: Jamb Rates UniJos High in its Admission Process

The University of Jos has been given top marks for ensuring greater national spread among candidates admitted by the University into its various programmes.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) rated the University among the top institutions in the Country that effectively cover candidates from the Thirty-Seven (37) States of the Federation and the FCT during their admissions exercise.

This was disclosed during the 2019 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Admissions in Nigeria held recently at the Bola Babalakin Auditorium, Gbongan, Osun State.

Presenting the 2018 Admission Performance Review on the implementation of JAMB’s Guidelines and Decisions, the JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede said the University of Jos was ranked Fourth (4th) among Nigerian Tertiary Institutions that had admitted candidates from all the 37 States and FCT following the admissions process. The University came second (2nd) only to University of Ilorin in the North-Central Geo-political Zone in that same category.

The JAMB Registrar further disclosed that the University of Jos was the Fifth (5th) best Tertiary Institution in the Country in terms of the number of candidates admitted from the 37 States and FCT with 31 States having not less than 20 candidates admitted into the University during the exercise.

Professor Oloyede admonished Tertiary Institutions in the Country to pursue an all-inclusive approach in their admissions exercise so as to have candidates from the different States represented in their institutions.

The JAMB Chief Executive revealed that the total admissions quota for all Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria in the 2018 exercise was 963,727 out of which 583,250 spaces were taken up. A total of 380,477 spaces were, however, not exhausted due to over subscription of a few programmes by the candidates, wrong O’Level subjects combination, low Post UTME screening score, UTME combination deficiency, non-acceptance of admission offer and duplication of application. Other reasons for candidates not being admitted were Awaiting Results, absence at Post UTME Screening, multiple registration and multiple examination scores as well as variants of names of the same candidates, late change of institution and mismatch of catchment areas.

Speaking earlier, Minister for Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu who was represented by the Director, Tertiary Education, Mr Joel Sunday Ojo described the Policy meeting as the forum for the formulation of policy guidelines for admission into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria. The Minister commended JAMB for re-modelling the system of UTME and Direct Entry (DE) Registration and urged other Examination Bodies to improve their registration process in order to check all avenues employed by candidates to bye-pass the process.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako had confirmed that the University was the 7th most subscribed University in Nigeria with 46,082 candidates applying for admission in the 2018 exercise. According to Professor Maimako, out of that number, 8,878 candidates were admitted representing 93.79 percent of the University’s Admissions Quota which is one of the best admission rates in the Country.
