UNIJOS HOSTS 15TH NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF CERAMICS RESEARCHERS
The Ceramics Researchers Association of Nigeria CeRAN, a non-profit organization that brings together Academics from Tertiary Institutions and Staff of Raw Material Research Institutes in Nigeria has organized its Fifteenth Annual National Conference and Exhibition with theme: ‘’Ceramics: A Catalyst for Technological Development’’ in conjunction with the University of Jos Department of Fine and Applied Arts, ten years after the University last hosted it.
CeRAN is a platform where members engage in researches, sharing of technical information, exploring new possibilities as well as finding ways of addressing challenges affecting the Science and Art of Ceramics in Nigeria.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako described the contribution of the University’s Fine and Applied Arts Department as impactful and visible.
Professor Maimako who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor ( Administration), Professor Teresa Nmadu expressed optimism that the Department could turn around the fortunes of the University through programmes that would showcase their creative spirit and entrepreneurial ability.
Delivering a keynote address, Professor Uriah Lar of the Department of Geology and Mining, University of Jos who spoke through Dr. Raymond Daspan said Ceramic materials play a significant role in human lives and could be a window for economic diversification.
Professor Lar noted that adequate funding and building of indigenous capacity will reduce poverty and create employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
National President, Ceramics Researchers Association of Nigeria CeRAN, Professor Grace Ojie-Ogwu said the gathering was a platform for sharing ideas and knowledge transfer.
Ogwu said the issue of quackery remains a major challenge in the profession and reiterated the Association’s commitment towards finding ways of ensuring that the wares produced are safe and of recommended standard.
Goodwill messages were received from the Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Professor Daniel Dabi and Chairman, Local Organizing Committee, Professor Habila Gukas.
A delegation of officials from the Ceramics Association of Nigeria was earlier received on a courtesy call by the Vice- Chancellor, University of Jos, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako in his office, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Teresa Nmadu.
